Synthesia pricing: the video minute is now 120 credits

Synthesia pricing sells a credit balance, and generated video draws 2 credits for every second, so one finished minute costs 120 credits. Synthesia converted its old video-minute quotas into credits during 2025 and kept the exchange rate, which is why the pricing page still describes the same plans in minutes. The rules worth knowing sit in the help centre: credits never roll over, and regenerating an edited video charges only for the seconds you added.

Key takeaways

  • Generated video costs 2 credits per second on Basic, Starter and Creator, so a one-minute video costs 120 credits.

  • Credits don't roll over, and upgrading mid-cycle forfeits whatever's left of the old plan's balance.

  • Editing and regenerating a video bills only the newly added duration, not the whole video again.

  • Enterprise plans get unlimited video minutes, so credits there pay only for dubbing, API calls, bulk personalisation and generated assets.

What Synthesia actually meters

Synthesia meters a credit, and the conversion from video is fixed and published: 2 credits per second of generated video. The company's engineering blog confirms the history, saying it moved every payment plan onto credits during 2025 after previously selling video time outright.

A minute counts when you press Generate, not when you write, preview or download. Drafts, scene previews and duplicates all cost nothing until you generate. Deleting a video doesn't refund the credits it consumed.

Other features price per minute at their own rates, all from the same balance:

API video costs less per minute than studio video, which is unusual and goes unexplained. Basic pays a dubbing penalty too: its 1,200 credits buy 10 dubbing minutes against 48 on Starter, so 120 a minute instead of 25.

How credits work

Credits reset at the start of each billing period and nothing carries forward. There's no expiry window to track because no balance survives the cycle.

Annual plans release the whole year in one balance, so Starter annual holds 14,500 credits from day one rather than 1,200 a month. That helps teams whose video work comes in bursts.

Upgrading mid-cycle resets you to the new plan's full allocation and forfeits the old balance, and your renewal date may shift with the prorated charge.

Regeneration is where the design beats most rivals. Change a script and you're billed for the new words' duration only. Removing, reordering or repunctuating costs nothing. Swapping an avatar bills the time the new avatar is on screen, while outfit and framing changes are free. Voice tone and pronunciation edits are free; language or accent changes bill the changed duration.

Top-ups are the one place the docs contradict each other. The self-serve credits article says you can top up mid-cycle; the credit-balance article says you can't and must upgrade or wait. Treat topping up as unconfirmed.

Enterprise runs a central credit pool that admins allocate per workspace, with alerts at 75%, 90% and 100% and a CSV consumption export.

What happens when you hit the limit

Generation blocks. Synthesia checks the balance first, so a video longer than your remaining credits refuses to launch rather than half-generating or billing an overage. Self-serve accounts upgrade or wait for renewal. Enterprise workspaces have feature access paused at 100% consumption until more credits are added.

Roleplay Sessions runs on a separate limit credits don't touch. Basic, Starter and Creator get 10 plays a month; Enterprise gets 25 shared across the whole organisation, not per workspace or per user. Playback pauses at the cap and resumes next month. Buying learner seats removes it.

Flexprice’s Take

Synthesia's credit model is one of the better-designed ones in this index, and its pricing page is one of the worse-maintained.

Billing regeneration by delta is the standout. Change a script and Synthesia charges the seconds you added, not the whole video again. In a product whose pitch is fixing a script without a reshoot, full price per generate would punish what you bought it for.

It checks your balance first, so a video you can't afford refuses to launch rather than half-rendering.

The page selling all this hasn't kept up. Its own FAQ still quotes the pre-cut prices, saying Starter costs "$29 per month or $264" a year while the card above it reads $19 and $14. Two help articles disagree on mid-cycle top-ups, and the comparison table still speaks in minutes after a company-wide move to credits.

Best For

Teams that iterate heavily on scripts and want edits to cost only what they change.

Watch Out For

No rollover at all, plus a mid-cycle upgrade that forfeits your remaining balance.
